My Walk to The High Line

For those of you unfamiliar with The High Line in NYC, just take a look at their website to read about it's interesting history ...

*Here is a brief bit from their site: The High Line was built in the 1930s, as part of a massive public-private infrastructure project called the West Side Improvement. It lifted freight traffic 30 feet in the air, removing dangerous trains from the streets of Manhattan's largest industrial district. No trains have run on the High Line since 1980. Friends of the High Line, a community-based non-profit group, formed in 1999 when the historic structure was under threat of demolition. Friends of the High Line works in partnership with the City of New York to preserve and maintain the structure as an elevated public park.

I took the Gansevoort & Washington Street entrance to The High Line. I decided to share pics of my walk there from 14th Street and 6th Ave. It runs from Gansevoort in the Meatpacking District to 20th Street in Chelsea 20th -30th Street is projected to open in 2010.

Above is The Standard Hotel which was built directly over The High Line. I think it looks absolutely Fantastic here! Haven't seen rooms yet, but can view nice wood panel ceilings from below :)

Various street views from below track...

Adore this sweet yellow ice cream truck that sits directly under High Line!

Had to show Diane von Furstenberg storefront (above) She & her husband, Barry Diller big-time "Friends of the High Line" :D

Hogs & Heifers has been around a looooong time and has quite a history of it's own!

Below is CECO Studios where I have worked on many commercials as a scenic artist.

Like this hair salon window above.

Guess this cute doggie was too tired to walk that day. Here his owner gives him a ride in a mini-shopping cart.

Above is Sam Renaissance, a self proclaimed "Urban Modernist Artist". Loved his vibrant palette! Apparently he is usually in Soho, but today I found him on 14th street.

I used to eat here at Son Cubano quite often, but have not been in awhile. Hope it's still good! Great looking interior, too.

Appreciate this chandelier hanging from such an industrial overhang. Doubt I can afford Rubin Chapelle but included link in case you can :)

I met Mike Fontana of Mike Fontana Studio as I crossed 14th Street. I stopped bc I liked the Rocky he was working on from Rocky and Bullwinkle Show and the Statue of Liberty head on way to Burning Man Festival. It turns out he worked as the chief sculptor & design associate for Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade for over 12 years! He has created an enormous amount of work-- very much worth checking out his sites.

My start, over from 6th ave and 14th street F train...

Asked Lena to come along, but once again she chose a nap! Luckily, my friend Stephanie met me there.

Check back Sunday for my post on the High Line itself. It's been a great hit so far for New Yorkers and tourists alike! I am proud that my good friend, Leslie Wolf at The Parks Dept played such an essential role in making the High Line happen!!
